Building a clothing brand

Every week a message arrives that opens the same way, "I have designs and I want a brand", and then stops at the question that follows it: what does it actually cost to start? The question is fair and the answer is not a number, because there are three roads and the number and the risk change together on each. Print each piece when it is ordered and pay only for what sold. Sew a small run at a local factory and own the cut, along with the stock that waits to be sold. Import a full run and watch the unit price fall while everything else rises. What comes before all three does not change: a name that holds, a customer you can describe, a design that can survive being printed or sewn, and a price with something left in it after ads and shipping. We write this from inside a factory in Saudi Arabia that prints, cuts and sews, which is a vantage point rather than a credential: we know exactly where each road starts, what it costs, and when it should be left to someone else. A brand does not start with a logo. It starts with the decision that comes before it.
