The guide
Cost, pricing and margin
A store can sell every day and still end the month with little in the account, and the price on the product page is rarely what went wrong. The drain is the costs that never made it onto the list: the payment gateway's cut, VAT, shipping, and the ad spend it took to bring in that one customer, all of it leaving quietly with every order. Margin is settled before the price is written, not at it. It is built down from the margin you mean to keep rather than up from what the blank cost you, markup is a different number and mistaking one for the other is where the difference goes, and a bundle earns its discount only when the margin is read across the whole basket. Print on demand sits on that same ledger, and we watch it from the print line: nothing bought before you know what sells, paid for out of the margin on every single unit. A trade worth calculating rather than assuming.
